Going Down Swinging

Sometimes its not ideal to go down swinging. Sometimes you should just walk away from the fight. Maybe its best to just suck it up and make the best of it.

A few things make me say this.

A thought furthered this morning by the lovely Jye. He goes in to a fight without fear, without any question of consequences. In his world there are no repercusions.

But then again, maybe Jye is onto something.

Quote of the day: (Vet) "You can almost see down to his brain". Funny because ginger cats are notoriously a few crayons short (as they say) and Jye is certainly no exception.

Boris and Balance

Balance is a hard thing to achieve and I don't think I'm coming anywhere close to it at the moment. When I throw myself into my work (day job) then my photography suffers incredibly. Now I'm taking almost a roll of film a day but my work is just hideous. I'm happier this way around (obviously) but sometimes I wish there could be harmony! The rediscovery of the Demi is having an incredible impact on my photography work. I'd pushed it aside for the newer, shinier Leica but the Demi is a workhorse and it takes the most amazingly wonderful negs. Beautiful to print, contrast just right - its a pretty spectacular camera. As I say, I've been pushing through about a roll of film a day - which is a remarkable feat considering its a half frame camera so that means around 50 shots to a 24 frame roll of film. Every time I turn around I have another roll to process. Not having used the Demi for many months I've had to relearn some skills (ie. first couple of rolls a little dodgy) but some of the results have been surprisingly nice!

I'm heading back into the darkroom now so hopefully there will be more to post tomorrow.

I'm (slightly) struggling with an idea for the upcoming exhibitions (I have a self-imposed "must be taken within the last six months/must be hand-printed rule" which sometimes makes my life difficult!) and am trying out all sorts of ideas. At the moment, I'm really excited by my three frame images and am exploring that some more. Suggestions are always welcome (yep, struggling)!

Squirrelled away in the darkroom with my mp3 player and some bodgy computer speakers, I rock the tunes pretty loud. I could happily spend my life in there (pending I implement some sort of working ventilation soon). The band that has been getting the most bodgy speaker time is Boris. I find them a very visual band - even when I'm sitting in the dark looking at prints - they evoke imagery. Maybe its because they have some pretty cool band photos...

A Change is as Good as a Helicopter Out the Window

I was forced to move offices at work. Top floor of a heritage listed building (aka no elevator), removed from my peers, much, much further away from the coffee shop, air conditioner vent that hadn't been cleaned since the introduction of air conditioners. Generally not a good move one would think. I was about to punch the next person that told me a change was as good as a holiday.

Friday afternoon I realised quite the opposite was true. Practice for the RiverFire (Brisbane's annual celebraton of the dirty river on which we are based around) saw an F1-11 zooming past my window at two in the afternoon. And then a helicopter literally danced right in front of me for about twenty minutes. Not one generally impressed by the wonders of aviation (in fact I have a fear of it), it was quite spectacular. And a beautiful moment that made me rather glad to be in solitude.
